Firewall

A firewall is a system which is used to protect a computer against intrusions from the network, or to protect a local network against attacks from the Internet.

Each computer connected to the Internet (and, more generally, to any network) is subject to an attack by a computer hacker. Computer hackers (generally baby hackers who try to implement intrusion techniques found on the Internet) probe the network (by sending data packets in a random fashion) in search of a connected machine, then look for a security breach in order to exploit it and access the data residing on the machine.

This threat is all the more important since the machine is permanently connected to the Internet, for many reasons:

the target machine is likely to be connected without being monitored;
the target machine is generally connected with a broader bandwidth;
the IP address of the target machine does not change (or changes rarely).


	It is therefore necessary, particularly for internauts using a cable or ADSL connection, to have a protection against network intrusions by installing a firewall system.
